Triangulation is an ongoing practice‐led collaboration between Julie Brooke and Susan Buret. We are both painters who are fascinated by grids and patterning, and we use repetition to create complex forms using simple geometries. In the summer of 2014 we independently began making work evoking the shimmer of the butterfly's wing through our use of colour and pattern. However, we approach our investigations from different points of view. Brooke, a former research scientist, was inspired by mathematical structures encountered during a residency in the ANU Department of Applied Mathematics, while Buret’s work was inspired by her direct observations of the flora and fauna of her garden. We spend time together in the studio and exchange paintings so that we can reference and respond to each other’s practice. In Triangulation 5, we exhibit a range of geometric works comprised of semi-circular paintings. These are installed to create optically active composite forms in which we compare and contrast our different approaches to exploring colour, pattern and spatial illusion.
