Time and the Ocean by Kendal Heyes

Opening Friday 13 September 6-8pm

Open 11am - 5pm Friday - Sunday 14 - 29 September

Time and the Ocean is an ongoing drawing project begun in 2010. It uses pyrographic techniques, drawing on watercolour paper using an electric pokerwork machine, and flaming over objects to create a negative shadow, like a photogram. The paper panels are made to interconnect, and are hung edge to edge to produce a single amorphous drawing that can be assembled in different ways each time it is shown. Rearrangements and the addition of new motifs shift the emphasis of the drawing’s subject matter over time.

From its original concern with ideas about time and location – a place by the coast – this work has grown to include imagery from the media, and the ocean as an indeterminate space. The ocean has many associations for me, from childhood experiences living on the coast in New Zealand, observing its infinite folds and variations, to ideas about ships and seafarers, explorers and refugees, pleasure and danger.
